Position Summary
The Translator and Coordinator is responsible for coordinating translation requests, triaging demands and assigning work to senior translators and discussing deadlines with clients. The Translator and Coordinator is also responsible for translating and reviewing a variety of documents accurately and efficiently, more generally from English to French, while maintaining the original meaning, format, and tone, and compliant with CAPE inclusive writing guide (French / English).  


Requirements 

Education & Experience 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Translation, Linguistics, or a related field.  

  • Accreditation or certification from a recognized Canadian translation association or institution is preferred.  

  • Over 5 years’ translation experience and similar work with NGOs, interest groups, government agencies, or unions.

  • Any equivalent combination of education and experience acceptable to management will be considered. 

  • Work experience in the legal, human rights and/or labour space an asset. 

  • Experience working in a fast-paced environment, working under pressure and with tight deadlines.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) is required.

  • Experience with virtual collaboration tools such as Microsoft Teams or Zoom is required.

Key responsibilities 

  • Client relation: receive, review, triage and assign translation, revision and terminology requests and follow up with clients 

  • Translate a wide range of documents, including but not limited to technical, financial, and marketing materials, in various formats (Word, PPT, Excel)

  • Ensure translated texts accurately convey the original meaning, context, and tone.  

  • Proofread and edit translations to maintain grammatical and stylistic consistency.

  • Support the provision of linguistic services such as proofreading, revision and quality control to maintain grammatical and stylistic consistency.

  • Conduct research as needed to understand specialized terminology and concepts.

  • Work closely with other translators, editors, project managers and vendors to meet project deadlines and quality standards.

  • Communicate effectively with clients and internal stakeholders to clarify requirements and address feedback and provide support.

  • Manage translation platform and mailbox.

  • Act as an intermediary between linguistic services, the Communications and Public Affairs director and other departments to help plan for demand, ensure compliance with linguistic services guidelines and share any information that can ensure seamless services.

  • Support the Communications and Public Affairs director in developing service model indicators, timelines, and deliverables needed to improve linguistic services. 

  • Under the guidance of the Communications and Public Affairs director, write procedures, guidelines and communications regarding linguistic services. 

  • Produce and analyze statistical reports on linguistic services, and follow up with the Communications and Public Affairs director to monitor annual trends and make recommendations for service improvement. 

  • Work closely with IT to resolve technical problems or improve translation and analytics platforms.

 

Other skills and abilities 

  • Knowledge and command of the source and target languages, that is, the two official languages. 

  • Skill in listening and observation is required to interpret messages correctly and deliver them to members appropriately.

  • Knowledge and command of technological innovations in translation, such as technological tools for documentary research, computer-assisted translation, desktop publishing applications, and translation memories.

  • Knowledge and command of terminological and documentary research methods and tools of all kinds to have a good knowledge of terminology, accelerate the translation process, and follow the development of languages and fields of specialization.

  • Knowledge of Internet operating methods.

  • Ability to manage projects and suppliers.
