Position Summary
Under the direction of the Senior Advisor, President’s office, the Organizer plays a crucial role in boosting and maintaining active membership at all levels of the association, from local leadership to rank-and-file members. They will also work on enhancing members’ sense of ownership of their association and building members’ abilities to lead change through their involvement in their union. Under the guidance of the Lead Organizer and Advisor, the Organizer is responsible for implementing the union’s transition to an “organizing model” on a local and workplace level. Specifically, they recruit member-organizers, build local organizing committees, and guide members on how to map their workplaces and to systematically build capacity to take collective action on the job and in their communities. 

The Organizer creates campaign materials and resources, facilitates organizing-related training, develops leaders and coordinates their assigned network of member-organizers. They develop campaign metrics and regularly report on progress to the Lead Organizer and Advisor and the Senior Advisor and participate in campaign planning. They work collaboratively and coordinate with other divisions to ensure that member-organizers receive the various forms of support they need. 


Requirements 

Education & Experience 

  • Undergraduate degree in the Social Sciences, Human Resources, Labour Relations, or a related discipline, combined with experience as a Union Organizer or campaign lead. 

  • 5-7 years of experience in union or community organizing, with expertise related to the scope of work undertaken by CAPE.

  • Experience with organizing software, data analysis and database management.

  • Experience working in an office in a fast-paced environment

Key responsibilities

  • Under the guidance of the Lead Organizer and the direction of the Senior Advisor, implements a strategic organizing action plan to build and expand CAPE’s network of leaders and organizers.
  • Develops local and department level indicators, timelines, and deliverables required to carry out the national strategic organizing plan. 
  • Develops plans with local organizing committees and organizers and identifies tactics and tools to support the network’s organizers and leaders.
  • Coaches' member organizers to map their workplace, build committees, and to collectively address specific workplace issues and concerns.
  • Creates campaign materials, organizing resources, and facilitates trainings
  • Develops a plan to build capacity for identified and/or recruited members of the organizing network to grow and nurture their respective network and base.
  • Using data from membership database and other tools, including past and future research conducted by CAPE, assesses challenges and opportunities for the creation of a healthy and thriving network of organizers and leaders.
  • Monitors membership engagement leveraging membership database and other tools, keeping accurate records of, and reporting on, member engagement, feedback, and participation to inform future network mobilization strategies and decision-making.
  • Use digital organizing tools to support all activities (ex. databases, Action Network, Action Builder, New Mode, Zoom, MS Teams). 
  • Deploys digital organizing tools within locals and the broad membership. 
  • Collaborates with the Local Liaison Officer on organizing activities and initiatives for local leadership.
  • Follows accessibility best practices and ensures mobilization strategies are developed through a diversity, equity and inclusion lens, and meet official languages requirements.
  • Participates in multi-disciplinary teams assigned to special initiatives and work collaboratively with employees in other divisions.

 

Other skills and abilities 

  • Strong skills in communicating persuasively but with diplomacy, in writing and orally, specialized information.

  • Ability to vulgarize complex issues, negotiate and persuade.

  • Expert skill in writing, presenting, and public speaking are required to communicated information tactfully, respectfully and effectively in communicating is required to support and coordinate various activities for CAPE’s local leadership

  • Political acumen, analytical thinking, effective problem-solving abilities.

  • Can work without supervision, with tight deadlines and under pressure.
