Volunteer for the Election and Resolutions Committee, cohort 2025!

We are seeking dedicated members to serve on the Elections and Resolutions Committee Cohort 2025!

If you have a strong commitment to fairness, democracy, and integrity, have an interest in governance issues and a talent for interpreting constitutions, bylaws, and policies, this is a great opportunity to play a vital role in ensuring a transparent and neutral election and resolution process in your union!

We are looking for volunteers from all bargaining units to join the 2025 Elections and Resolutions Committee (ERC) cohort to carry out a mandate ending January 2026.

Details about the roles and responsibilities of the committee may be found in CAPE’s constitution and bylaws on the CAPE website – in particular, Bylaw #3, and article 15 of the Constitution .

>> Submitting Your Application

To be considered, members wishing to join the ERC should complete the application form by clicking here. (National Executive members are ineligible to serve on the ERC.)

Candidates have until Friday, March 14 at 5:00 p.m. EST to submit their applications.

>> Workload 2025

A by-election will likely be held in 2025 to fill vacancies on the National Executive Committee (NEC) for the remainder of its mandate, and, as in other years, members will be invited to submit resolutions.

>> Meeting Frequency

The ERC usually meets once a week or more during the nomination and resolution submission period. The ERC may space out meetings when possible. The ERC will determine the frequency and time of its meetings in consultation with the National Office. All meetings will take place via teleconference or videoconference unless required otherwise, especially when handling confidential information.

>> Confidential Information

The ERC is tasked with managing sensitive and confidential information. Occasionally, ERC members will need to view documents in person in offices designated by CAPE, under supervision, either in its headquarters in Ottawa or near the region where members are based to avoid unnecessary long-distance travel.

>> Confidentiality of ERC Membership List

CAPE keeps the composition of the ERC membership confidential throughout the duration of the mandate; however, ERC members have the right to disclose their involvement in the committee.

>> National Office Support

The National Office hosts and manages the ERC Secretariat and, as such, offers support to the ERC in all their activities, including administrative support, secretarial assistance, and translation services.

>> Mandatory Training

ERC members will receive mandatory training. All costs will be covered by CAPE. Most meeting, trainings and other activities can be conducted virtually.

The training is expected to take place in Spring 2025 .

>> Leave of Absence Covered by CAPE

Leave of absence for union business will be reimbursed by CAPE in the form of salary, as well as all related expenses. This applies for all activities of the committee during working hours, when necessary.

>> Neutrality and Independence

To preserve the neutrality and independence of the committee, during their mandate ERC members cannot be or become members of the National Executive Committee (NEC) in the year of their mandate.  Additionally, they are prohibited from seconding the nomination of NEC candidates, volunteering for candidates, or offering any form of support to candidates. In addition, members of the committee may not publicly divulge their opinion on a candidate or a resolution. However, committee members retain their overall right to vote.

>> Call for Diversity

We strongly encourage racialized members, members of the LGBTQ2+ community, women, persons with a disability and members of Indigenous communities or other equity-deserving groups to volunteer.
