UN forum on people of African descent: CAPE delegates push for greater representation

From April 16 to 19, two members of the Canadian Association of Professional Employees (CAPE) represented the association at the Third Permanent Forum for People of African Descent in Geneva, Switzerland, where they participated in meaningful discussions on how to achieve justice and equality for Black people globally. The learnings from this event will form the basis of CAPE’s strategy to push the government on combating anti-Black racism.

Bernadeth Betchi and Maggie Fondong participated in the three-day session that brought together global activists and social justice warriors dedicated to advancing the rights and interests of people of African descent worldwide. The forum provided an important platform for individuals to share perspectives and experiences, engage in meaningful discussions, and collaborate on strategies to address historic and ongoing injustices faced by Black communities.

“It was a reminder that we are not alone in our struggles, and that by standing together and supporting one another, we can overcome even the most formidable challenges,” said Betchi.  “The forum left us feeling empowered, inspired, and more determined than ever to continue advocating for the rights and well-being of people of African descent, both locally and globally.”

The two delegates are currently preparing a report based on their work on the forum. The report, which will be presented at the National Executive Committee meeting in the last week of June, will support the development of a member-led strategy for holding the federal government accountable to its commitments to combat anti-Black racism, both within and outside the workplace.
