We know that when we come together, we’re stronger. The theme for this year’s International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination is #VoicesForActionAgainstRacism, which highlights how together our voices can be louder, and our collective actions can make a big difference in the elimination of racism in all its forms.
Racism takes root in silence and complacency. Speaking up against racism and in favour of inclusion and acceptance, whether it is for yourself or for others, is a powerful way to bring about change in behaviour and mentality.
Empowering yourself or being an ally will produce the multiplicity of voices needed to propel movement forward.
Uniting our Voices
In recent years a group of nearly 1,300 Black federal public service employees have raised their voices and taken action together against injustice through their class-action lawsuit to address the systemic discrimination many Black employees have encountered. CAPE stands in solidarity with the plaintiffs.
Launched in 2021, the Network of Asian Federal Employees came together to help bring their voices and actions together in solidarity and support of Asian employees in response to the rise in anti-Asian racism and hate crimes throughout the pandemic.
CAPE itself strives to be the best ally to all its racialized members and has partnered with the Canadian Centre for Diversity and Inclusion to learn how to make the best use of its voice and platform to raise awareness and affect change from within and without. As an ally, CAPE is committed to non-complacency in its operations and services to members.
Together we can learn, grow, and help eliminate racism by fostering awareness, dialogue and action.
By joining our voices and actions together we can help to improve the federal workplace to be a welcoming, safe and equitable environment for all.
