National Indigenous History Month – June

The First Nations, Métis and Inuit Peoples of Turtle Island are the original builders and caregivers of a land and a nation with unique cultures, communities, languages and traditions. These communities have roots on this continent that go back hundreds of years.

Did you know that more than 1.67 million people in Canada identify as Aboriginal? Or that there were 162,865 Status First Nations people who reported having an Indigenous mother tongue in 2016? CAPE encourages its members to take the opportunity of National Indigenous History Month to learn more about First Nations, Métis and Inuit Peoples.

CAPE supports the Calls to Action of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada. As a union representing federal public sector employees, we take it upon ourselves to implement measures within our means and our mandate, such as bringing the spotlight on Indigenous communities, educating our members about their history and struggles, but also in mobilizing support for them to eliminate anti-Indigenous racism and discrimination in the workplace and beyond.
