On October 4, Nathan Prier, President of the Canadian Association of Professional Employees met with Mike Duheme, Commissioner of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) to share CAPE’s key priorities and advocate for CAPE members.
This initial meeting between the two leaders served as a point of introduction and provided a chance for the two to become acquainted. Commissioner Duheme shared his vision for the future of the national police force and reflected on some of the important issues and decisions on the horizon, including the RCMP’s strategic plan review. He invited questions from CAPE’s leadership and indicated that he is eager to establish a productive working relationship.
Nathan took the opportunity to raise several key issues of importance to CAPE’s RCMP civilian members, particularly civilian members who have experienced roadblocks to their advancement due to the Public Service Staffing Alignment being stalled. He advocated for a stronger role for civilian members within the RCMP to ensure that these workers’ unique roles and institutional knowledge remain and that civilian members can again advance in their careers within the RCMP. Commissioner Duheme confirmed his commitment to seeing their success within the organization.
Nathan also raised other key concerns, including the pay modernization plan and possible restructuring within the organization and was assured that these issues are also top of mind within the RCMP.
Commissioner Duheme underlined that he shares the union’s goal of ensuring a safe, respectful and high-quality work environment for CAPE members within the RCMP. Nathan thanked him for his willingness to collaborate. The two leaders plan to meet regularly to share information, ask questions, and ensure that CAPE RCMP members’ needs are properly addressed.
