CLC Congress: CAPE and PSAC call on other unions to join the fight for remote work rights

CAPE President Nathan Prier and PSAC National President Sharon DeSousa brought the federal public sector workers’ remote work campaign to the national labour stage at the Canadian Labour Congress’ Canadian Council meeting.

The two leaders spoke to dozens of affiliates from various Canadian public and private sector unions, federations of labour and local labour councils.  They focused on showcasing the benefits of remote work for public and private employees alike, looking to secure nationwide support for this emerging approach. By rallying collective endorsement, they aimed to create a unified front that champions flexible work options as a new employment standard in Canada.

The campaign is part of a broad effort led by the four largest federal public sector unions to push back against the employer, aiming at repealing the three day in-office mandate and enshrining flexibility and remote work rights in federal collective agreements.

Coming together around remote work since the spring of 2024, the Canadian Association of Professional Employees (CAPE), the Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC), the Professional Institute of the Public Service of Canada (PIPSC) and the Association of Canadian Financial Officers (ACFO) have multiplied joint efforts to advance remote works for their members across the country.

The Canadian Council meetings took place on October 2 and 3, 2024. CAPE President Nathan Prier was also sworn in as a CLC delegate at the meeting, the first that he has attended as CAPE president.

CAPE has been a member of the CLC since 2021.
