Effective April 1, 2018, all forms of contraceptives will now be covered under the Public Service Health Care Plan.
Previously, the PSHCP only covered birth control pills. The plan has now extended its coverage to include all non-oral contraceptives such as contraceptive implants, transdermal patches, vaginal rings, diaphragms and intrauterine devices (IUD).
Just like any other medications covered under the plan, these birth control methods will be reimbursed at 80% of the usual and reasonable amount.
The changes to the plan were negotiated through the Public Service Health Care Plan Partners Committee, which includes bargaining agents, Treasury Board and pensioners.
“Respecting women’s rights, including reproductive health rights, is critically important to our government’s fundamental commitment to empowering women,” said Scott Brison, President of the Treasury Board. “Expanding the range of contraceptive options for members of the Public Service Health Care Plan and their families is just the right thing to do.”
The entire Public Service Health Care Plan is long overdue for other significant improvements. A review of the plan and negotiations will begin in the spring.
