The Canadian Association of Professional Employees is disheartened to see the federal government once again override the rights of workers in this country, after asking the Canada Industrial Relations Board to order post office employees back to work.
The month-long strike during this busy period only highlighted the critical importance of the services these workers provide. They should be compensated fairly and have health and safety concerns dealt with appropriately. More than anything, they should be able to bargain fairly and freely, and not have their employer rely on government interventions while they refuse to bargain.
Instead, workers are being forced to pay the price for years of poor management decisions while leadership sits happy with their fat paycheques and bonuses. This is one more dismal milestone in the employer-led race to the bottom of workers’ rights and all Canadians should be furious.
CAPE stands firmly with its CUPW siblings and will continue to fight for all workers to have better working conditions across the country and around the world.
