Driven largely by far-right extremism, anti-2SLGBTQI+ hate is on the rise in Canada and around the world. In 2023, Canadian police reported a 69 per cent increase in crimes targeting sexual orientation over the previous year – and a 388 per cent increase since 2016. Discriminatory policies have been introduced in several provinces and anti-trans protests have erupted across the country. Violence and rhetoric have become a constant threat to the safety and well-being of individuals and entire communities.
The 2022 Public Service Employee Survey revealed that 2SLGBTQI+ workers in the federal public sector experienced lower rates of job satisfaction and much higher rates of discrimination and harassment in the workplace than those who did not identify as 2SLGBTQI+. This is unacceptable. The Employment Equity Act Review Task Force recommended including 2SLGBTQI+ people as an employment equity group, but this is only a first step in eliminating the historical barriers the community has faced.
CAPE is committed to steadfastly defending, supporting and promoting the rights of 2SLGBTQI+ communities in the workplace and beyond. Everyone deserves the freedom to unconditionally be themselves, to love who they love, and express their identity – not with an absence of fear – but with an abundance of enthusiasm and pride.
