Position Summary

 Reporting to the Director of Communications and Public Affairs, the Digital Communications Advisor works collaboratively in support of the Communications Advisor (Digital Engagement) as part of the Communications and Public Affairs team. The advisor supports digital member engagement, outreach strategies, and the management and maintenance of various digital tools and channels. Key responsibilities include managing member emails and CAPE’s bilingual website to ensure these digital channels effectively serve CAPE members and align with communication and engagement goals. The role also involves publishing high-quality, relevant bilingual content in a timely manner and coordinating with various divisions to promote their content by email, the website and social media. Additionally, the Digital Communications Advisor plays a crucial role in monitoring, evaluating, and reporting on digital engagement effectiveness, providing valuable analytical insights and reports.

The Digital Communications Advisor will be expected to take on additional duties and responsibilities as needed, in collaboration with other members of the team and across divisions.

 

Requirements 
 Education & Experience 

  • College diploma or undergraduate degree in communications, public affairs, digital marketing or any related discipline. 

  • Minimum 5-7 years of experience providing digital, social and multi-media communications, or public relations and research and analysis services to senior executives of either a not-for-profit organization, federal government agency or department, or federal labour union or other similar organizations.

 

Note: Equivalent combinations of education and/or experience are considered.

 

Key responsibilities

  • Draft bilingual copy for digital communications and various digital outlets, including emails, the website and social media.

  • Support the Communications Advisor - Digital Engagement in the management of the website, mainly responsible for maintenance and update CAPE’s website using Drupal (CMS), ensuring it is user-friendly, up-to-date, accessible and aligned with communication and engagement strategies. 

  • Monitor the website for any technical issues or errors and work to resolve them promptly (e.g., broken links, slow loading times, or display issues) working collaboratively with web developers and other vendors.

  • Conduct keyword research and optimize website content, including meta tags, headings, and images, to improve search engine rankings and drive organic traffic.

  • Ensure the publication of bilingual emails using platforms such as, but not limited to, Microsoft Dynamics, Action Network and MailChimp.

  • Plan and schedule email content for publication, managing CAPE’s email calendar to ensure timely, well-spaced and targeted communications. 

  • Track key performance indicators (KPIs) such as engagement rates, click-through rates, conversions, and audience growth across various digital platforms using tools like Google Analytics, social media insights, and email campaign metrics, to assess the performance of campaigns, identify areas for improvement, and to provide actionable insights.

  • Generate comprehensive reports that evaluate the impact of digital initiatives, offering data-driven recommendations to optimize future communication strategies and enhance audience engagement.

  • Support the creation and publication of social media content that encourages online interaction and fosters a strong community among members and allies across platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, X, LinkedIn, YouTube, and more.

  • Collaborate with team members to design and execute online campaigns that align with organizational goals and monitor and report on the achievement of organizing targets. 

  • Stay current with industry trends and best practices in digital marketing, member engagement, and web development.

  • Assist with various projects, such as events and products, ensuring compliance with organizational policies, quality standards, and deadlines.

 

Other skills and abilities 

  • Proficient in the principles and practices of writing copy for communications, public affairs, digital marketing, outreach, and other materials used by the Association. 

  • Ability to write for different audiences and different products and remain neutral in serving CAPE’s elected officers, staff, and members, in what can be a charged atmosphere.

  • Proficient in editing public affairs, marketing, outreach, and other communications materials in both English and French, ensuring proper language structure, correct spelling, error-free content (including typographical and factual accuracy), and adherence to the appropriate length and format for each medium.

  • Knowledge of research principles, practices, and both traditional and electronic research tools to analyze trends in CAPE membership views, as well as the perspectives of other target audiences. This includes monitoring media coverage of CAPE issues and statements, providing valuable input for the development of the Association's communications strategies, campaigns, plans, and new products. 

  • Knowledge of union protocol to develop and maintain effective contacts and coordinate efforts with other unions, and of union principles and values.
