The recent murder of George Floyd in the United States has sent shockwaves around the world. The tragic and unnecessary loss of black lives are all too frequent. Racial injustice is real. As we watch the events in the United States unfold, we cannot ignore that anti-Black racism and racial discrimination exist here, in Canada, too.
Today CAPE joins its voice with Canadian leaders as well as leaders and communities around the world to stand against anti-Black racism, racial hate, systemic discrimination, and bigotry. We call upon our members, our staff, members of broad labour community and all Canadians to take a firm stance against racial hatred and help protect human life and dignity.
CAPE has always fought for employee rights, but, let us not forget that we also fight for human rights.
Everyone must be part of the solution and we must work together to ensure justice for all. Racism thrives in the company of silence and unconscious biases. We must not be silent. We must be prepared to defend the notion that everybody, regardless of race, ethnicity, or sexual orientation, deserves a life without fear for their personal safety.
Let’s be united and determined,
Greg Phillips.
