CAPE offers congratulations to Mark Carney, who was announced as the winner of the Liberal leadership race last night and will soon assume the role of prime minister. We look forward to working with him to strengthen and protect Canada’s federal public sector in the face of an unprecedented national crisis.
CAPE also thanks Justin Trudeau for his leadership over the last 10 years. As prime minister, he oversaw monumental challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic and Donald Trump’s first term as president. Our members have delivered in times of crisis to ensure that Canadians received the services and policies they rely on and will do so again in the face of the crisis in front of us now.
The years to come will require a robust, all-of-government response to manage the demands of a tumultuous world. A changing US relationship with Canada, ongoing global conflicts, and financial pressures are creating uncertainty and threatening our economy, our security, and our sovereignty.
We urge the new leader—and all political parties—to clearly commit to prioritizing a strong, accountable public service and working peoples’ well-being as a fundamental pillar of his vision for Canada’s future.
CAPE is committed to collaborating with leaders of all political stripes to strengthen Canada’s federal public sector, ensuring it remains resilient, adaptable, and prepared—especially during turbulent times. A strong, well-supported federal public sector that retains top talent is essential for economic stability and to develop the supports for working people that will get us through this crisis.
