On September 22nd, the Canadian Association of Professional Employees (CAPE) met with Dominic Laporte, CEO of the Translation Bureau and discussed issues facing interpreters and translators.
Mr. Laporte touched upon the advent of AI in the translation industry. He also offered updates on progress made to deal with interpreters’ health and safety, acknowledging the fact that many interpreters continue to live in fear of being injured on the job. Agreeing that one incident is one too many, Mr Laporte committed to continuing investing resources towards creating the safe environment interpreters deserve.
Mr. Laporte confirmed the creation of the Bureau’s new director of parliamentary affairs and interpreter well-being, a function that will be dedicated to ensuring the interpreters’ health and safety is properly managed.
CAPE will continue to stand up for all TR members with a strong focus on interpreters, pressing the Translation Bureau, its department, Public Services and Procurement Canada, and the Treasury Board for permanent solutions to secure a healthy and safe work environment for them.
