CAPE office - 350 Albert St., Ottawa
and
Zoom
As public servants confront growing economic uncertainty and the prospects of a new government, there are concerns that workers could face significant lay-offs in the near future. Cuts and hiring-freezes have already begun in some departments with very weak mandates to carry them out, little indication of whether they will be extended, and no certainty about the next government and its plans.
To ensure that workers are aware of their rights and that CAPE and other unions are ready to fight back against potential layoffs, the CAPE Education Committee will be hosting two events: one on the technical elements of how workforce adjustment (WFA) works; and the other on how we can resist government cuts and layoffs while defending ourselves in the workplace.
Fighting back against layoffs and government cuts that will undermine public services will require developing a broad campaign with unions and other allies, as well as equipping locals and members to defend themselves in the workplace.
CAPE President Nathan Prier and retired public servant Brian McDougall will speak to the political dimension of preparing for WFA. As the CAPE National Executive Committee develops a strategy to ‘stop the cuts’ before they happen, Nathan will speak to members on what to expect and how we can organize to defend ourselves. As a CAPE activist who lived through the DRAP cuts under the Harper Government, Brian will share lessons learned on how to resist WFA in the workplace by building solidarity and holding the employer accountable.
