Carey Hill
EC Director
I am Carey Hill and I use she/her/elle pronouns. I am an EC Director of CAPE with Members for Change to help build a more democratic, transparent and progressive union. I am so pleased to be working alongside these amazing individuals. I believe in a democratic union that celebrates diversity and equality and works in solidarity with other unions.
Who am I?
- I grew up in Calgary and completed my Master’s degree at the University of Calgary in Political Science. I started out as a Journalism student and Page in the House of Commons in my first year of university at Carleton.
- I completed my PhD at the University of British Columbia in 2006. While at UBC, I was the membership mobilization co-chair and grievance committee chair of our teaching assistants’ union, CUPE Local 2278. We were on strike for four weeks and won a significant increase in wages, health benefits, and maternity and paternity benefits. I believe that, as a union, our greatest power is the threat of strike, not the strike itself.
- I have worked in the private sector as an evaluation consultant working for the Alberta Tobacco Reduction Alliance, the Calgary Health Region, Alberta Health and Wellness and the Town of Banff. I have also worked in the health field at the Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research as an Impact Analyst and Program Evaluator.
- I joined the federal public service in 2009 with the First Nations and Inuit Health Branch of Health Canada as a Recruitment of Policy Leaders candidate in the National Capital Region. Within a few years, I moved to Employment and Social Development Canada and worked on files related to the not-for-profit sector as well as seniors policy. I also spent a year on an informal interchange with Volunteer Canada. In 2018, I joined the Strategic Water Management Team at Indigenous Services Canada. I love my work and am a proud public servant. I have been privileged to work with so many great public servants that it inspires me to want to work with them on union issues.
What I’ll Do for CAPE
- I am committed to ensuring there are enough Labour Relations Officers to respond to members’ concerns in a timely manner. I know of colleagues who had to wait three months to hear back. This is unacceptable.
- I will support a more democratic union through better communications with members and work on the ground.
- I will fight to grow the Defence Fund so we can send a clear message to the employer about our strength as a union.
- I will work to develop stronger locals with local union leaders, stewards, and members.
A Bit More About Me
- I have lived in Calgary, Vancouver, London ON, and South Bend, Indiana. I feel like I have gained a variety of perspectives from these various geographies.
- I enjoy reading food literature. I especially like Ruth Reichl, Anthony Bourdain, Eric Ripert, David Chang, and Kwami Onduachi.
- I am a big sports fan. I watch Canadian football, American football, soccer, hockey etcetera. For me, sports are about teamwork. I especially love it when the underdog wins.
- I am an animal lover. I have two cats, Delta and Woodrow.
